1930’s Sterling Silver & Gemstone Replica of the 12th century St. Remy “Coronation” Chalice

Our treasured handmade sterling replica of the St. Remy Chalice from Reims Cathedral in Paris dates to most likely the 1930’s. Every part made by hand, blending medieval & modern silversmithing techniques. Most of the gold plating has worn. A Latin engraving reads "Est Calix Novum Testamentum In San Hic Guine Meo Qui Pro Vobis Funde Tur" and translates to "This Cup Is The New Testament In My Blood. My Blood, Pour it Out For You". Also engraved is the name of the presumable patrons who gifted this exquisite treasure to Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in New Orleans.

Approximately 100 carats of garnets, green, yellow, & purple sapphires are bezel set and surrounded by exquisite and opulent silver filigree & scrollwork, millegrain beading, and colorful baked enamel in decorative panels. A worthy tribute to the original chalice in Reims Cathedral and a piece of art that will undoubtedly increase in value with the passing of time.

The chalice of St. Remigius is one of the most beautiful and treasured symbols of Christianity. Its sheer beauty, magnificent craftsmanship and interesting history make it a legend in its own right. St. Remigius, Apostle of the Franks and Archbishop of Reims, France, during the VI Century was a very influential man who converted the Franks to Christianity. The Franks had been mainly warriors until then and had robbed or destroyed many of the sacred vessels of the Churches of the era. It is said that, after the Franks converted to Christianity, the chalice of St. Remigius was cut from the gold of the celebrated vase of the Church of Soissons, previously broken by a soldier of Clovis, King of the Franks. The St. Remy chalice has been preciously kept since then in the treasury of the Cathedral of Reims, and used during communion for the coronation ceremonies of numerous Kings of France.

It was acquired from a member of the clergy who, prior to having the calling for the cloth, worked for over a decade at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, (The International Shrine of St. Jude and also known as the Old Mortuary Chapel) in New Orleans, just a few blocks away from St. Louis Cathedral in Jackson Square. The chalice was gifted to him when he left for the seminary.
