St. George The Victorious Defeating The Dragon Russian Orthodox Wooden Egg Hand Painted
St. George the Victorious, aka Holy Great Martyr George the Trophy-Bearer, Victory-bearer and Wonder worker. Here the Victory Bearer, is depicted on his white stallion while slaying the three headed serpent. This large wooden egg is highly lacquered and intricately painted with vivid colors of reds, golds, and greens, and often the artists painted with a single hair brush.
Saint George is a patron saint of Moscow and appears on Moscow’s coat of arms. The deep religious history of the Russian people pray to him to intercede with Christ for their soul's salvation. The eggs were thought to bring happiness, inspiration, and spiritual well-being to the owners.
Because the egg is a symbol of new life and resurrection, it has been carved, painted, and highly decorated by the Russian people and especially the artists, in many different materials This stunningly decorated egg has the artist's initials, M.A.P. painted on the bottom.
The wooden pedestal is as highly lacquered, decorated with gold paint, and with beveled layers.
